Steube Announces 2021 Congressional Art Competition Winner
PUNTA GORDA, FLA.—U.S. Representative Greg Steube (R-Fla.) named James Tordecillas, a senior at Charlotte High School in Punta Gorda, Fla., as the winner of the 2021 Congressional Art Competition.
“Congratulations to James on being selected as this year’s winner of the Congressional Art Competition,” Steube said. “James is a talented artist with a bright future, and I am honored to display his artwork in the Capitol for a year to represent our district. Thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s competition.”
Hanna-Isabella Gonzalez, a senior at North Port High School in North Port, Fla. came in second place in the competition. Emma Barber, a senior at Charlotte High School in Punta Gorda, Fla. was named the third place winner.
Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. Since the Artistic Discovery competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated.
Students submit entries to their Representative’s office, and panels of district artists select the winning entries. Winners are recognized both in their district and at an annual awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. The first-place winner is given the opportunity to display their artwork at the United States Capitol for one year.
