House passes Steube bill to waive fees for veterans
The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a bill sponsored by Rep. Greg Steube, R-Sarasota, to waive special-use permit fees for veterans’ demonstrations and special events at war memorials administered by the National Park Service in the District of Columbia.
The Free Veterans from Fees Act (H.R. 1029) passed Tuesday by a vote of 421-3. Rep. Scott Franklin, R-Lakeland, and Rep. Darren Soto, D-Kissimmee, both voted for the bill.
The bill passed the House in the previous two congressional sessions, Steube’s office said in a news release. It has been endorsed by American Veterans, a volunteer-led organization with 250,000 members.
“Our nation’s veterans paid more than their fair share through their service to our nation and should no longer be subject to the burdensome administrative fees to visit military memorials or go on their own Honor Flights,” Steube said in the release. “Though we will never be able to fully repay these heroes, this legislation is a small step to properly honor their sacrifice, patriotism, and bravery.”
