‘Enough is enough’: Congressmen Buchanan and Steube oppose debt limit deal

Sarasota Herald-Tribune – U.S. Reps Vern Buchanan and Greg Steube are among the contingent of Republican House members opposing the deal reached by House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy and President Joe Biden to lift the debt ceiling and curb federal spending.

Republican critics of the deal say it doesn’t do enough to cut spending, something Buchanan argued in tweet Tuesday announcing his opposition.

“Nobody wants to default on our debt, but neither can we afford to keep spending money we don’t have,” Buchanan said, adding that the bill does “very little to actually get our fiscal house in order.”

“A vote for this bill is a vote for reinforcing Washington’s wasteful spending habits,” Buchanan continued. “I will be voting NO. Enough is enough!”

Unless the debt ceiling is lifted, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has estimated that the federal government will run out of money as soon as June 5 and default on the debt, with potentially catastrophic consequences for the economy.

Buchanan, a Longboat Key resident, represents all of Manatee County and a portion of Hillsborough County.

Greg Steube, a Sarasota resident, represents all of Sarasota County and Charlotte County and part of Lee County.

“While I was originally optimistic about some of the conservative wins found in the negotiated debt ceiling package, I have read the bill, heard from hundreds of my constituents, and ultimately cannot in good conscience vote for this legislation,” Steube said in a statement.
