Republican Rep. Greg Steube to focus on extending Trump tax cuts after U.S. House win
SARASOTA HERALD TRIBUNE — With Republican Congressman Greg Steube easily winning his reelection bid for his District 17 seat that spans Sarasota, Charlotte and northeast Lee counties, his first priority is extending President-elect Donald Trump’s tax cut policy.
Steube, who has represented Sarasota in congress since 2018, won 63.9% of the vote over Democrat Manny Lopez. The former U.S. Army JAG Corps officer ran on a pro-life, pro-Second Amendment platform that also championed stricter immigration policies. Lopez’s platform rested on protecting abortion rights, protecting Social Security and Medicare and increasing economic development.
Hours after his reelection, Steube confirmed that his first task is addressing the Trump tax cuts that were passed in 2017 and are set to expire in 2025. Trump, who won a decisive victory in the U.S. presidential race, has talked about extending the cuts when he’s back in office. Steube, a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, Congress’ chief tax-writing panel, said that it will be a focus for the members.
“Obviously, the policies and what we’re doing locally is what is resonating with voters….This district is representative of segments of the country,” Steube said. “I think we’re doing what we need to be doing and continuing to fight for the values that this area represents.”
Here’s how Steube fared in each county:
Charlotte County: 69.1% of votes
Lee County: 65.7% of votes
Sarasota County: 61.2% of votes
“The voters trust me to continue representing them,” Steube said. “Having been born here, from here and having family from here, I think it’s a great reflection on the district – giving me the opportunity to continue to represent them.”
