Steube’s Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act Passes U.S. House in Bipartisan Vote
WASHINGTON — The U.S. House of Representatives today passed Representative Greg Steube’s (R-Fla.) bill, the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, by a bipartisan vote of 218-206-1.
“The House has delivered on its promise to protect women’s sports,” said Rep. Steube. “Americans are united in our belief that men have no place in women’s sports, whether it’s breaking records, entering locker rooms, or stealing scholarship opportunities. Denying biological truth erases fairness in sports and puts women’s safety and opportunities at risk. Today’s passage sends a clear message to the Senate—protecting women and girls in sports is not negotiable.”
The Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act ensures that only biological females compete against other biological females in women’s sports programs operated, sponsored, or facilitated by recipients of federal funding.
“The strides women have made across all corners of the sports world deserve to be celebrated and protected. Yet, girls and women are losing opportunities to compete when a biological male enters the field. How is this any different than keeping women off the field altogether? Allowing women and girls to suffer for the sake of the dishonesty of wokeness is inexcusable. I am pleased to see the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act pass the House and I applaud Congressman Steube and the countless women who are fighting to protect the legacy—and future—of women’s athletics in this country,” said Education and Workforce Committee Chairman Walberg.
The legislation is supported by the Republican Study Committee and has 83 cosponsors.
“The passage of H.R. 28 is a declaration that the achievements and opportunities our daughters, sisters, and future champions have earned will not be compromised,” said RSC Chairman August Pfluger (TX-11). “For over fifty years, Title IX has opened doors for millions of young women. Now, we’re reinforcing those foundations with iron-clad protections that ensure fair competition remains truly fair. As a father to 3 young girls, I am relieved that we are championing common sense policies that empower and protect women’s sports. I applaud the efforts of RSC Member Rep. Greg Steube on this critical issue.”
The legislation is endorsed by Independent Women’s Voice, Concerned Women for America Legislative Action Committee, Heritage Action for America, Eagle Forum, Family Research Council, Parents Defending Education (PDE) Action, Association of Mature American Citizens (AMAC), Center for Urban Renewal and Education (CURE), and CPAC.
Background
Rep. Steube has led the fight to champion women’s sports for years in Congress.
In the 118th Congress, the Republican Conference listed the defense of women’s sports in the Commitment to America and passed Rep. Steube’s bill in the first 100 days of the Republican Majority by a vote of 219-203, without a single Democrat voting in favor. The Senate companion, introduced by U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) was never brought to the floor under the Democrat Senate Majority Leader, Chuck Schumer.
In the 117th Congress, Rep. Steube and former Republican Study Committee Chairman Rep. Jim Banks (R-Ind.) filed a discharge petition for The Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act where it received 187 signatures.
