GOP rep. hits HR at Nats Park in Congressional Baseball Game
With the Nationals on a road trip in Colorado, their home stadium played host to the annual Congressional Baseball Game on Wednesday night. Though the game features rosters of Democrats and Republicans not normally known for their home run power, one congressman managed to surprise everyone with a blast into the left-field seats.
Rep. Greg Steube (R) is a member of the House of Representatives for Florida’s 17th congressional district. He also apparently has a hidden talent for the game of baseball. In addition to his third-inning home run, the 43-year-old Steube also threw 120 pitches over 5 2/3 innings as the GOP’s starting pitcher before shifting over to third base.
Steube’s home run was the first long ball hit out of the park since the game was moved to Nationals Park in 2008. According to the New York Post, the last congressman believed to have hit one at any venue was Rep. Ron Paul (R) in 1979.
The blast proved to be an important one, as the Republicans squeezed out a 13-12 win over the Democrats over seven innings. Steube caught a popup with the tying run on base to clinch the victory.
