Steube Introduces Bill Restricting Loan Forgiveness from Entities Involved in Terrorism
THE FLORIDIAN — Representative Greg Steube (R-FL) has introduced legislation forbidding the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program from crediting entities and their employees involved in illegal activity.
Rep. Steube’s No Loan Forgiveness for Terrorists Act codifies a March executive order issued by President Donald Trump, which explained that the 2007 program has been heavily compromised.
Established to forgive remaining student debt after graduates enter the public service sector for ten years, the executive order’s press release claims that the Biden Administration not only hastened the process via a waiver system but “has misdirected tax dollars into activist organizations that not only fail to serve the public interest but actually harm our national security and American values, sometimes through criminal means.”
As a result, Rep. Steube’s bill modifies the definition of a “public sector job” found in the Higher Education Act to disqualify any time employees spend in organizations that violate federal immigration or tort laws, support terror activities or child abuse, or engage in discrimination.
Senator Jim Banks (R-IN) is introducing the Senate companion bill.
“If someone accepts a job with an organization that is actively undermining U.S. national security and federal law, they shouldn’t expect a thank you note and taxpayer-funded prize for their work,” the Florida Congressman said in his press release, adding, “President Trump’s executive order to protect the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program is the right policy to prevent the subsidization of illegal activity. That is why Senator Banks and I have set forward this bill to codify President Trump’s order and ensure nefarious non-profits and their employees are not rewarded with student loan forgiveness that should be reserved for law enforcement and deserving public servants.”
Similarly, Sen. Banks said, “Taxpayers shouldn’t be forced to pay student loans for radicals who aid terrorists, mutilate children, or promote illegal immigration. This bill codifies President Trump’s order to stop subsidizing anti-American extremism.”
