Rep. Greg Steube Reintroduces Legislation for our Service Members and Veterans

WASHINGTON — U.S. Representative Greg Steube (R-Fla.) this week reintroduced six bills in the 118th Congress to benefit our nation’s service members and veterans.

“In my third term in the U.S. House of Representatives, I remain laser focused on improving the lives of our service members and veterans,” said Rep. Steube. “As a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom, I know firsthand the sacrifice required of our military personnel and their families while their lives are on hold to serve. This week, I reintroduced six bills to protect the Constitutional rights, healthcare needs, and educational goals of our service members and veterans.”

On January 9, 2023, Rep. Steube reintroduced the Veterans’ True Choice Act into the 118th Congress, which will expand healthcare options for disabled veterans and enable service-connected veterans the ability to use TRICARE Select and TRICARE for Life. This legislation would allow veterans to use community care providers if a local Veterans Affairs (VA) facility does not offer the necessary services.

In addition to the Veterans’ True Choice Act, Rep. Steube reintroduced the following legislation this week:

  • Safe Bases Act will protect second amendment rights on military bases by providing the authority for the Department of Defense to allow an active duty member of the Armed Forces to carry a concealed firearm on any military installation.
  • Religious Insignia on Dog Tags Act will direct the Department of Defense to allow trademarks owned or controlled by DOD to be combined with religious insignia on commercial identification tags, commonly known as dog tags, and to be sold by lawful trademark licensees.
  • Veterans Cannabis Use for Safe Healing Act will ensure veterans receive the appropriate treatment to address their healthcare needs by prohibiting the Secretary of Veterans Affairs from denying a veteran benefits due to the use of medical marijuana in states where the substance is legal.
  • Modern GI Bill Act will help meet the educational and financial needs of America’s veterans by allowing individuals who are entitled to Post-9/11 educational assistance through the GI Bill to use eligible funds to repay federal student loans incurred prior to military service.
  • Time of Service Act will eliminate the time limitation on the use of a veteran’s educational assistance entitlement under the Post-9/11 Educational Assistance Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs.
  • A resolution maintaining that North Korea’s 1968 seizure of the vessel, USS Pueblo, and its detention of the crew were in violation of international law. The resolution declares that the USS Pueblo is the property of the United States government and it should be returned to the United States.

Florida’s newly redistricted 17th Congressional District now covers all of Sarasota and Charlotte counties as well as portions of Lee County. View Rep. Steube’s biography here.
