Rep. Steube Introduces Bill to Abolish USAID and End Wasteful Foreign Aid
WASHINGTON, D.C.— U.S. Representative Greg Steube (R-Fla.) today introduced legislation to abolish the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and immediately halt all federal funding for the agency. The bill rescinds unobligated taxpayer funds and transfers USAID’s assets and essential responsibilities to the U.S. Department of State.
“For too long, USAID has funneled billions of American tax dollars into bloated, inefficient foreign aid programs that are riddled with waste, corruption and ideological bias,” said Rep. Steube. “Instead of benefitting American taxpayers who fund these programs, USAID’s initiatives often push progressive social agendas that are out of touch with the values and interests of our nation. Worse yet, these dollars frequently end up in the hands of bad actors who do not have America’s interests in mind and misuse the funds for purposes far removed from their original intent.”
Rep. Steube highlighted the agency’s failure to align with U.S. national interests, calling out its history of funding projects that undermine American sovereignty and security priorities. “American taxpayers should not be forced to subsidize misguided globalist experiments that do nothing to strengthen our country or protect our interests aboard,” he said.
The legislation directs the State Department to assume necessary functions related to essential foreign aid transitions, ensuring a streamlined and more accountable approach to international engagement.
“It’s time to put America first,” Steube continued. “We cannot afford to continue pouring money into an unaccountable bureaucracy that prioritizes global bureaucrats and political pet projects over the needs of hardworking Americans. My bill ends USAID’s wasteful operations and redirects taxpayer dollars toward strengthening our nation’s priorities.”
