Steube Announces Appointments of United States Service Academy Nominees
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Greg Steube (R-Fla.) today announced the following students’ appointments into the four United States Service Academies. Steube nominated these individuals earlier this year.
“Our students are the next generation of community leaders and military heroes,” Steube said. “As a former service member, I understand the dedication and sacrifice that is required to take on a challenge like this, and I am proud to have this group of talented students represent our community in their service to our country.”
Steube today personally congratulated the students through a Zoom conference call.

Charlotte County
Emily Shand of Florida Southwestern Collegiate High School has been appointed to the United States Naval Academy.
Shand comes from a family of veterans, with family members who have served in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and in Vietnam. This, and her father’s service in the United States Coast Guard became her inspiration for attending the Naval Academy Preparatory School and a major part of her selection for the United States Naval Academy.
John McIntrye, a Punta Gorda resident attending the New Mexico Military Institute, has been appointed to the United States Military Academy.
McIntrye’s inspiration to attend the United States Military Academy came from his father. Dedicated to a future in service, he began to attend the New Mexico Military Institute at fourteen years old, starting as a sophomore. Aside from a rigorous academic schedule, McIntrye played both football and tennis in school, while also becoming an Executive Officer in JROTC Battalion and a First Lieutenant for his company.
Highlands County
Matthew Andrews of Sebring High School has been appointed to the United States Air Force Academy.
Andrews’ thorough record of service made him an extremely competitive application for the United States Air Force Academy. In high school, Andrews achieved Eagle Scout status in the Boy Scouts, took a leadership role in ROTC and participated in athletics. His relentless dedication to serving his community and our nation will lead to sure success as a military officer.
Polk County
Micah Kirkham of Mulberry Senior High School has been appointed to the United States Military Academy.
Kirkham understands that graduating from the service academies represents something more than a degree – he understands that it represents character, resolve and dedication to serving our nation. In four years of high school, Kirkham spent every season playing a sport. When he wasn’t running track or cross country, or spending his afternoons on the soccer field, he was studying for his heavy academic course load or participating in JROTC.
Sarasota County
Erik Rozanski of Western High School has been appointed to the United States Merchant Marine Academy.
Rozanski felt the call to serve from a very young age and views attending the Academy as the ultimate form of patriotism. He is a varsity athlete and participated in the ROTC program throughout middle school and high school, advancing to Petty Officer 2nd Class. He also participated in the Sea Cadet program in Ft. Lauderdale and earned the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class.
Madeline Smith of Pine View School has been appointed to the United States Naval Academy.
Smith’s drive to attend the United States Naval Academy comes from her deep interest in oceanography. She has spent her time in high school as a dedicated student of science and spending her remaining time either working with the Varsity sailing team or volunteering. At the Pine View School, she founded the Pine View buildOn Club, which had a mission of building schools in developing nations.
