Steube Cosponsors Legislation to Empower Schools and Prevent Child Human Trafficking
WASHINGTON, D.C.—U.S. Representative Greg Steube (R-Fla.) cosponsored H.R. 4388, the Human Trafficking and Exploitation Prevention Training Act, which would implement a new curriculum to train students, teachers, and school personnel to recognize and respond to signs of human trafficking and exploitation in children and youth.
“With nearly a fifth of Florida’s human trafficking victims being children, we need to empower our educators and administrators to understand the signs and protect our students,” Steube said. “The safety of our children is a top priority in our education system and this legislation will protect precious lives by giving vulnerable children the support systems they need.”
According to the 2018 Trafficking In Persons Report produced by the U.S. Department of State, human trafficking risk factors include lack of awareness of commercial exploitation and human trafficking, sexualization of children, and lack of resources. This legislation comes in response to troubling reports of child human trafficking across Florida.
This legislation was introduced by U.S. Representative Alcee Hastings (D-Fla.) and has received bipartisan support. You can read the full text of the bill here.
