Steube Honors Lake Placid Local Hero and Police Sergeant as FL-17 MVP for April
LAKE PLACID, FLA.— U.S. Representative Greg Steube (R-Fla.) today recognized Sergeant Mostyn Mullins of the Lake Placid Police Department as the FL-17 MVP for April 2021. Sergeant Mullins is a dedicated public servant who also serves as the only Child Safety Instructor in Highlands County.
“Sergeant Mullins has dedicated his career to keeping our community safe through the Lake Placid Police Department and has gone the extra mile to ensure that children in our community are protected through his work as a Child Safety Instructor,” Steube said. “From instructing local caregivers on how to transport children safely in vehicles to teaching kids how to ride a bike, our community is blessed to have such an outstanding individual, and I am honored to represent him.”
Sergeant Mullins has distributed 790 car seats to families in need throughout Highlands County and other areas in the District. He has also gone to local hospitals and instructed caregivers on child passenger safety for when children are released from the hospital. He is also a women’s self-defense instructor, a certified bicycle helmet fitter, a bicycle rodeo coordinator, a member of the region’s Child Abduction Response Team, a voting member on the Children’s Services Council of Highlands County, an Advisory Board Member for Healthy Families in Highlands County. In addition, Sergeant Mullins is a member of the Florida Occupancy Protection Coalition, which makes occupant protection recommendations to the state for legislation.
Sergeant Mullins has also given approximately 750 children bicycle helmets to local children and donated around 60 bicycles to children in need. He is truly dedicated to making the community a safer place and spends his off-duty time speaking to children at churches, schools, and daycares about bullying and pedestrian and bicycle safety.
Sergeant Mullins was this year’s fourth recipient of Steube’s FL-17 MVP Award. Each month, Steube and his team recognize an MVP from the 17th Congressional District who has made outstanding and unique contributions in the community. The purpose of this award is to recognize the unsung heroes across the District as they display extraordinary dedication to make a difference. To thank them for their work, MVPs are presented with a flag flown over the U.S. Capitol and are publicly recognized in Steube’s weekly newsletter.
