Steube Honors Local Military Family as FL-17 MVPs for September

WAUCHULA, FLA. – U.S. Representative Greg Steube (R-Fla.) today recognized Howard Richards, Zachary Richards, and Sarah Richards Hager as FL-17 MVPs for September 2021 for their outstanding military and public service.

Steube also presented Vietnam veteran Howard Richards with the U.S. Army Bronze Star Medal.

“It is an honor to recognize the Richards family as September’s MVPs for Florida’s 17th Congressional District,” Steube said. “Howard, Zachary, and Sarah all answered the call to serve our great nation in the United States Army, and they have all set a shining example of dedication, patriotism, and service to our community here in Hardee County.”

Howard Richards enlisted in the Army for Aviation Maintenance and served in Vietnam from 1970-1972. Howard distinguished himself by meritorious service and demonstrated exemplary professionalism and initiative, earning him the Bronze Star Medal. After returning from service, Howard dedicated his career to environmental conservation across Florida and in Hardee County.

Zachary Richards served in the United States Army from 2002 – 2006 with the 1st Armor Division as a Combat Engineer. His service led to two deployments to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom and earned him many accolades. He now works as a Heavy Equipment Operator for the Hardee County Board of County Commissioners.

Sarah Richards Hager served in the Army from 2002 -2010 with the 143rd Sustainment Command as a Human Resources Specialist. She was deployed in Baghdad, Afghanistan, and also supported Operation Iraqi Freedom. Her service also earned her many accolades. Sarah now serves Hardee County as an Executive Assistant in the Office of Management & Budget for the Board of County Commissioners.

Each month, Steube and his team recognize an MVP from the 17th Congressional District who has made outstanding and unique contributions to the community. The purpose of this award is to recognize the unsung heroes across the District as they display extraordinary dedication to making a difference. To thank them for their work, MVPs are presented with a flag flown over the U.S. Capitol and are publicly recognized in Steube’s weekly newsletter.
