Steube Introduces Legislation to Counter CCP-Controlled Huawei, Force Biden Admin to Keep on Entity List
WASHINGTON, D.C.— U.S. Representative Greg Steube (R-Fla.) today introduced the Keep Huawei on the Entity List Act, legislation which would continue export controls and keep Chinese Communist Party-affiliated Huawei Technologies Co. on the U.S. Department of Commerce’s banned entity list.
“Huawei is one of the most powerful tools that the Chinese Communist Party can use for espionage and potential destruction against the United States,” Steube said. “Keeping them on the banned entity list should be common sense – Commerce Secretary Raimondo’s refusal to commit to this simple step is both terrifying and dangerous. Our legislation takes this national security risk seriously and calls on our colleagues from Congress and the Administration to stand firm in our commitment to be tough on Communist China.”
Several of Steube’s colleagues joined in introducing this legislation, including U.S. Representatives Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), Michael Waltz (R-Fla.), Brian Babin (R-Texas), Randy Weber (R-Texas), and Rick Crawford (R-Ark.). Other cosponsors include U.S. Representative Ronny Jackson (R-Texas.)
Steube joined colleagues in early February calling for a hold on the confirmation hearing for Governor Gina Raimondo (D-R.I.) as Secretary of Commerce until she committed to keeping Huawei on the entity list after she refused a solid answer to the question. White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki also dodged the question in a briefing.
There have historically been bipartisan calls to keep Huawei on the Commerce Department’s entity list of sanctioned companies until the Secretary of Commerce certifies that the company no longer poses a national security threat. The U.S. Senate confirmed Raimondo on Tuesday.
This bill follows Steube’s recent reintroduction of the CCP Visa Disclosure Act, which prevents intellectual property theft by reforming the student visa application process. This legislation requires aliens applying for certain United States visas to disclose if they receive funds from the Government of the People’s Republic of China or the Chinese Communist Party.
