Steube Protects Sanctity of Life, Urges IRS to End Abortion Tax Breaks

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Greg Steube (R-Fla) joined colleagues in sending a letter to U.S. Department of Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin urging the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to end tax breaks for abortions by no longer considering abortions “medical care.”

“The purpose of an abortion is to terminate a human life, which is entirely antithetical to the idea of ‘medical care,'” Steube said. “Allowing tax deductions for ending a life not only violates our American principles, but also goes against the original intention of the deduction.”

The letter calls for the IRS to stop treating premiums for health insurance that covers abortions as medical care, unless in compliance with the law’s separate accounting requirements for coverage of non-medical care.

The deduction for medical care was first enacted under the Revenue Act of 1942 when abortion was a crime in most states. It was not until Roe v. Wade that the IRS modified their definition of “medical care” to include the termination of unborn children.
