Steube Recognizes Alex Meyer as December FL-17 MVP
FORT MYERS, FLA.— Today, U.S. Representative Greg Steube (R-Fla.) recognized Punta Gorda Local Alex Meyer as December‘s FL-17 MVP.
“Alex Meyer embodies the qualities that make our community great. Alex is compassionate, generous, outgoing, dedicated, and he’s a fighter.” Steube said. “Despite battling his numerous medical obstacles, Alex persevered and continuously gave back to our community, and communities across the country, helping other children in need.”
Alex undergoes chemotherapy and is currently a patient at John Hopkins All Children’s in St. Petersburg. He has received over 60 chemo infusions since his diagnosis and has since started oral chemo twice daily for four months. Throughout his treatment, Alex has lost over 75% of his vision, his sense of smell, the majority of his sense of taste, and has short-term memory loss.
During a chemo appointment last year, here at Golisano, Alex asked his parents if they could do a family toy drive. They started going shopping every Sunday after church and ended up purchasing almost 600 toys from stores all over town. The Meyers Family then started the Ironman Alex’s Toy Drive. Alex’s goal was to collect a thousand toys. Through social media, local press, and community outreach, he started receiving packages from all over the world.
Alex has collected and donated thousands of toys and continues his incredible charitable work. Rep. Steube presented Alex Meyer with a certificate and flag flown over the U.S. Capitol in his honor.
Each month, Rep. Steube and his team recognize an MVP from the 17th Congressional District who has made outstanding and unique contributions to the community. The purpose of this award is to recognize the unsung heroes across the District as they display extraordinary dedication to making a difference. MVPs are presented with a flag flown over the U.S. Capitol to thank them for their work and are publicly recognized in Rep. Steube’s weekly newsletter.
