Steube Reintroduces Bipartisan Legislation to Properly Honor Nation’s Veterans, Remove Burdensome Administrative Fees

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Greg Steube (R-Fla.) reintroduced the Free Veterans from Fees Act, legislation which would waive application fees for special use permits for veterans’ demonstrations and special events at war memorials on federal land. Steube was joined by U.S. Representative Ron Kind (D-Wis.) as a co-lead to the legislation.

“This legislation would properly thank our nation’s heroes by giving them the opportunity to travel to our nation’s capital on national honor buses and flights without the unnecessary paperwork and financial costs,” Steube said. “The last thing veterans and their families should worry about are burdensome administrative fees when visiting memorials and monuments erected in their honor.”

This bill would waive fees associated with any demonstration or special event whose primary purpose is to commemorate or honor either a group of people because of their service as veterans or immediate family members of veterans. Permit applications remain subject to all other laws, regulations, and policies regarding the application, issuance, and execution of special use permits for veterans’ demonstrations or special events.

“Our veterans served with dignity and honor, and deserve the very best our nation has to offer,” said Kind. “Although we can never repay the debt of gratitude we owe these heroic men and women, waiving application fees for the facilitation of honor flights and honor buses is one simple way to show our appreciation for their service and sacrifice.”

This bill was introduced with original cosponsors, U.S. Representatives Maria Elvira Salazar (R-Fla.), Jim Baird (R-Ind.), Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.), James Langevin (D-R.I.), Randy Weber (R-Texas), David Joyce (R-Ohio), Ralph Norman (R-S.C.), Jody Hice (R-Ga.), Ashley Hinson (R-Iowa), Bob Good (R-Va.), Chris Stewart (R-Utah), Michael Waltz (R-Fla.), Dan Meuser (R-Pa.), Kat Cammack (R-Fla.), and Tom McClintock (R-Calif.)

“Our veterans have made the greatest sacrifice to defend our freedom,” said Salazar. “I’m proud to be an original cosponsor of the Free Veterans from Fees Act so that our men & women in uniform never have to assume burdensome costs to honor our fallen.”

Steube introduced identical legislation in the 116th Congress, which passed the U.S. House of Representatives with bipartisan support.

Steube is a former U.S. Army JAG Officer and served in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
