SARASOTA – U.S. Representative Greg Steube (R-Fla.) today announced the newest installment in the Veterans History Project Series, highlighting the extraordinary service of Lt. Col. John Knox, United States Army. Lt. Col. Knox’s decorated military career includes service in pivotal operations such as the Gulf War, the Global War on Terror, Operation Just Cause, and Operation Restore Hope.
“Lt. Col. John Knox embodies the dedication, innovation, and leadership that define the best of our armed forces,” said Congressman Steube. “From spearheading critical IED countermeasures in Afghanistan to leading vital task forces that protected countless lives, his contributions have left an indelible mark on our nation’s defense and the safety of our troops. It is an honor to help share his remarkable story and preserve it for generations to come.”
Lt. Col. Knox’s pioneering efforts in Afghanistan included setting up the first Improvised Explosive Device (IED) task force and conducting comprehensive IED training. Reflecting on his service, Lt. Col. Knox offered this advice: “Do your job. Your job isn’t a 9-to-5. Take care of your people, and they’ll take care of you. Respect the people around you. If you’re coming in as an officer, listen to the sergeants.”

The Office of Congressman Greg Steube will submit the interview to the Veterans History Project, an initiative of the Library of Congress’s American Folklife Center to collect and retain the oral histories of our nation’s veterans.
Initially started in 2000, the Veterans History Project aims to collect, preserve, and make accessible the personal accounts of the United States military veterans and Gold Star Families so that future generations may hear directly from the veterans and better understand their service. Researchers, scholars, and educators rely upon VHP collections as a primary source. The oral histories, photographs, manuscripts, and other original materials supplement historical texts and valued cultural resources. Veterans from all branches and ranks of the United States military who served in World War I through the more recent conflicts are eligible to participate.
