Please contact Rianna McDonald at Rianna.McDonald@mail.house.gov or 941-499-3214 to request an application and ask any questions. The 2024-2025 cycle deadline is October 4, 2024. A Service Academy Fair will be held in FL-17 in June 2024.

The honor of attending a service academy comes with the obligation and commitment to serve in the military for a minimum of five years upon graduation. Rep. Steube may nominate candidates for appointment to four of the five U.S. service academies:

The U.S. Coast Guard Academy (USCGA), New London, CT, the fifth service academy, does not require a congressional nomination.

Each applicant for a nomination must meet the following eligibility requirements as of July 1 of the year of admission to the Academy. The academies, not our office, set these requirements:

  • Be at least 17 years old but not have passed the 23rd birthday (25th birthday for the Merchant Marine Academy)
  • Be a U.S. citizen or national
  • Be unmarried, not pregnant, and without legal obligation to support children or other dependents.
  • Reside within the boundaries of the 17th Congressional District of Florida (Please go to https://www.house.gov/representatives/find-your-representative to confirm your residence in District 17)
  • Meet the medical, physical, and academic requirements of the Academy

Nominations are based on a “whole person” evaluation. Factors such as academic achievements, extra-curricular activities, leadership skills, character, and motivation are considered and compared with other applicants.

Please note that in addition to applying for a nomination from our office, you MUST apply directly to the Academy of your choice. Rep. Steube’s nomination does not automatically result in selection by the service academies. Appointment to each Academy is ultimately decided upon by the Academy to which the appointee has applied.

Once the application and supporting documentation is submitted, our office will reach out to the candidate to schedule an interview with the Service Academy Panel.

Your Completed Application Should Include:

  • Test Scores – To be considered, you must take the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and/or the American College Testing (ACT). Do not delay in taking the SAT and/or ACT. Your application packet with test scores must be completed by the deadline. We will update a file as the student makes test results available to our office.
  • High School Records – a certified sealed copy of your high school transcript must be included with your application.
  • Photograph – one photograph of yourself (Submit a color photo taken in the last six months. Use a clear image of your face. Do not use filters commonly used on social media. Have someone else take your photo or use a self-timer—no selfies from front-facing smartphone cameras. Use a plain or unobstructed background. It is recommended to use your latest high school portrait.)
  • Letters of Recommendation – Three letters of recommendation are required. These letters must be signed and dated by the author.
  • Personal Essay – You must submit a personal essay (maximum one page) on your motivation and why you believe you are qualified to be nominated to attend a military academy. You must sign and date your essay. For a sample layout of the essay, click here.
  • Copy of a government-issued ID (ie. passport or driver’s license)

I appreciate your interest in the United States Service Academy.
